Hi and welcome to MMO Gumbo, a “one podnah on an epic” quest blog devoted to the MMO’s, RPGs, and whatever other game I’m playing at the moment.
I’m Couillon (pronounced: koo-yon) and as of this writing a happy 40-ish year-old gamer geeky keyboard warrior. I’m a new blogger and I’m educating myself on the fly about blogging so be patient and please send me any helpful comments or suggestions.
I’m married with one college age kid and IRL work as an environmental professional in the Washington DC area. I’ve been a gamer since I grew up playing Ultima I, II, and III on my Commodore 64 with my neighbor and dog earing all my long lost copies of D&D, James Bond, and Twilight 2000 manuals. Fast forward to Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance and some table top wargaming and that was the 90’s for me. Only in the last 4-5 years have I had the discretionary time and luxury to enjoy MMORPGs.
I’m a Cajun from South Louisiana so that’s where the name “Couillon” comes from. Couillon, if you know your Cajun French, is basically a term of endearment among friends and can be derogatory term among enemies. Gumbo is a another Cajun term (a roux based type of soup) and basically describes the mix of games that make up my gaming library. Last but not least, my first Couillon happened to be a warden I rolled in LOTRO.
What type of gamer am I? I like to think I’ve found that happy medium between “casual” and “hardcore” but I’m more casual than anything. I’m not much of a raider, I pick and choose which games I PVP in and I’m often focused on fluff like the story or soundtrack and other trivial things devs put in the game to keep us busy. I get excited by new titles, new game mechanics/innovations and launch days! Turn offs include game hackers, secretive game companies, and excessive grinds to disguise lack of content.
